About Umayr Malik
I graduated from the University of Nottingham in June 2020 with a BEng Chemical Engineering Hons degree at a first-class level. During my time at university, I have always endeavoured to involve myself in teaching younger pupils. My time as a STEM Ambassador allowed me to work with a large variety of students, ranging from KS2 to A-level. I found the experience to be incredibly fulfilling and enjoyable as I am able to have a positive impact on pupils’ understanding and interest for the subjects. Additionally, the experience allowed me to evolve my lesson planning skills and explore different methods to engage with students of different age groups.
Personally, I am inquisitive and enjoy learning; thus, I believe it is important to give the curriculum further real-world context in order to really engage students. I also recognise the importance of organization and an effective, clear, and structured method of teaching, which makes it easier for student understanding.
With regards to the current climate with the Covid-19 crisis, and the disruption to schools nationwide, I find it more important than ever to involve myself in aiding younger pupils in their studies.

My emphasis when teaching is to first lay a strong foundation of knowledge and then build on it using real world examples. I approach each topic ensuring the student understands what is required from the Exam Board learning outcomes. Then we build on this by exploring and discussing real world examples. This helps to solidify the newly learned information. During this time students ask questions which is an indication of their curiosity toward the subject. The topic is then summarized by completing the relevant exam-style questions and activities.
