About Tom

I have always had a passion for teaching others subjects that I myself am passionate about. Since University I have, in some capacity, been involved with STEM workshops, focus groups, or mentoring schemes, which remains to this day. Whilst I have been lucky to delve further into the world of engineering, in both breadth and depth, the core elements of maths and physics have always been my strongest subjects. I was lucky that during my school years, I had great teachers and a brilliant support system to help me through the difficult time of GCSEs and A-Levels. I would love nothing more than to repay that kindness and offer my services as a tutor.

I am a true believer in bringing academic skills and techniques to life in order to best understand and tackle future problems within the subject. Having both studied and applied teaching techniques to previous students, I pride myself on being able to identify which form of learning works best. A lesson will usually last 1-2 hours depending on the content we will be working through. The first session will be to understand what aspects of the subject(s) they understand or would like to focus on, followed by time to best identify how they learn best, allowing me to tailor the tutoring experience. After getting A*s and As in Maths, Further Maths, and Physics A-Levels, I went on to complete a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cardiff University. After graduating, I joined a pharmaceutical company, taking on multiple roles over the 4 years working there. With both academic and real-world knowledge in engineering and tutoring engineering, and experience in tailoring teaching methods to maximise a student's learning ability

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I've been interested in how things work from a young age, inspired by shows like How It's Made. As I progressed through school and university, I fell in love with sharing knowledge and helping others experience that "eureka" moment when everything clicks.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach GCSE Maths and Triple Science, and A-Level Maths and Physics. I focus on A-Level maths and physics because I studied them myself.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My dad, who always saw the beauty in maths, inspired me by showing me how fascinating numbers can be. In school, my maths teacher Mr. Nicholls, with his patience and deep knowledge, shaped how I now guide and teach others.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience is key. The goal is to guide students to their own understanding, which takes time and persistence. Kindness is also important-understanding how it feels to struggle helps me relate to my students and support them effectively.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In prep for my first year at university, instead of doing proper revision, I researched the fastest ways to learn. I found that teaching others provided the highest retention, and that has become a core part of how I now teach-by having students "teach" me the topic in their own words.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

Patience is often a challenge, especially when it's difficult to find the method that helps the student grasp the material. It's tempting to give the answer, but the goal is to guide them toward truly retaining the knowledge.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I'm also a professional singer, and tutoring allows me to balance that passion with my love for teaching.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof?

Two things: I bring fun and enjoyment into every lesson, even with subjects like maths and physics. I also focus on the most effective methods of knowledge retention, based on research and experience.
