In my maths tutoring I move from the known to the unknown. I start by uncovering what the student already does fluently (like basic operations) to new concepts. Each step stays within reach: I introduce the new topic, do guided problems together, then let the student try solo while I listen for misconceptions. When an error pops up, we trace it back to the last secure step and rebuild.
As they get more confident, I make things harder bit by bit (like connecting fractions to division, then division to algebra, then algebra to graphs), always pointing out how it’s just the old idea in a new form. Old questions pop up again so it sticks, I ask them to explain it their way, and sometimes they teach me. In the end, hard stuff feels like a line of easy steps, and not a big jump.
