About Maia

Hello! I am currently a PhD student in San Francisco, California, studying epidemiology and biostatistics. My particular research areas include infectious disease and social epidemiology - more specifically, my goal is to assess and improve health outcomes among vulnerable communities in the Bay Area. I specialize in pretty complicated statistical methods (such as dyadic data analysis), and I'm also committed to community engagement and equitable research practices.

I struggled with math and science as a middle and high school student, but I excelled as a neuroscience major in college and went on to receive a Masters degree in Epidemiology. Now as a doctoral student in Epidemiology and Biostatistics, I am confident that I can be a compassionate and effective tutor for students who feel intimidated by math and science. Although I have pursued an academic career in science, I also excelled in writing and humanities and am fluent in Spanish, so I can cater to those needs as well. Finally, I am passionate about music and the arts, and continue to play in a community symphony in San Francisco.

Given my background and expertise as an interdisciplinary public health scientist with a lifelong passion for music and the arts, my teaching methods and techniques include:
-Personalized instruction
-Empathetic listening
-Scaffolded learning
-Real-World connections
-Interactive teaching strategies:
-Formative assessment:
-Encouragement and positive reinforcement:

A typical lesson plan from me includes:
-The student provides me with a narrative description of the subject matter and points of potential confusion
-Break down the problem step by step, explaining the reasoning behind each step and provide examples to illustrate the process.
-Addressing each point of confusion mentioned in the narrative description by encouraging students to actively participate, ask questions, and share their thoughts on how to approach the problem. I will use their input to guide the discussion and tailor explanations to their specific needs.
-When necessary, provide alternative methods or strategies for solving the problem, acknowledging that different approaches may work better for different students. This helps accommodate diverse learning styles and fosters a sense of flexibility and creativity in problem-solving.

What sets me apart as a tutor is my adaptability towards different learning styles and my interdisciplinary approach. My skill set is very broad and includes both quantitative and qualitative expertise, which makes me an ideal tutor for students who don't feel accommodated in a traditional classroom.

My lessons are for elementary through high school students as well as college students. I provide tutoring in statistics, natural sciences, quantitative methods, psychology, writing, and Spanish language, among others on a case by case basis.
