  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I started using English in my life when I was about 8 years old. English was all around me already at that age. I had books in English lying around on various exciting topics: health, fitness, interior design. I had a wonderful private tutor who taught me how to pronounce English sounds. She worked at a local radio network, and she had a beautiful, smooth, rich voice that might’ve been very inspiring. Her method of teaching pronunciation worked well for me: she focused on articulating the sounds correctly and she would get me to use all articulators: the tongue, the mouth, the soft palate, the hard palate, the alveolar ridge, to produce correct sounds in English. Moreover, I practised English together with my friend which was also really fun and meaningful.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I can’t think of a specific character that’s out there, but I can invent this character right now. A character that is a living and breathing representation of English looks like this: they love adventure and travel. They love being challenged and are uncomfortable with being comfortable. They are self-critical because they believe it will make them a better person. They like being expressive: they love drawing, singing and dancing.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I’ve lived in two countries where English is the predominant language: Australia and the UK. The behaviour that I like in these countries is a subtle dance of managing expectations. You want to be an individual and focus on your personal growth and at the same time you want to be in a group and enjoy the benefits of social cohesion. You want to stand firmly on the ground and have your individual voice heard, but you also don’t want to be misunderstood or offend anyone. It’s a careful balancing act: you are walking on a tight rope like Philippe Petit walking on a highwire between the Twin Towers in 1974.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Early on in life I started working for international organisations such as the British Council and Shell. Even as a teenager English was my dominant language; it just became a big part of my life.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Perhaps, overthinking one’s abilities can be a hindrance to one’s becoming proficient in this language. Think about what you want to use this language for, and you will find a way to express yourself.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was a teenager, I was involved in a non-for-profit organisation called Model United Nations of the Russian Far East. In this organisation, we only used English. The goal of this organisation wasn’t for young people to practise English, but to discuss important global issues that shaped lives of international communities in all continents. That’s where I developed a habit of using English for a particular purpose.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

When I studied for my bachelor’s degree in Australia, I was working a lot on presenting my artworks to my tutors, other students and wider audiences in Sydney. That helped me communicate my ideas to a variety of stakeholders.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

When you start working with me, I will ask you, “How would you like to use the language?” “Where do you see yourself in 2 years from now?” Through the vigorous teacher training that I undertook and most importantly through years of mindful teaching, I can offer a range of tools to help you get to your final destination.
