About Ben

About me: - Mathematics Ph.D. from the London School of Economics. - GradStat from the Royal Statistical Society. - Have taught at Cambridge University, LSE, and King's College London (where I also did short teacher training courses). - Spent 1 year teaching maths to children in an inner city school. - Over 15 years tutoring experience (several of my students are now professors or lecturers). - Experience working as a data science/machine learning consultant in industry. I enjoy mathematics, statistics & programming, and sharing that enthusiasm with others.

About the lesson

I teach GCSE & A-level students, undergraduates and postgraduates, and offer both ongoing lessons or one-off help with projects. I have many years' experience teaching mathematics, statistics and computer programming, and applications of these subjects to fields such as economics, finance, machine learning and data science. See below for a list of areas covered. Each student is different, and I adjust my teaching method depending on their needs. After consulting with the student I will collect the relevant teaching materials (notes, exercises, past papers, etc.) and make a plan. Initial lessons will follow this plan, and after getting a feel for the strengths and weaknesses of the student the plan can be adjusted to match. I try to engage the student as much as possible by asking questions to make sure they understand, and posing problems for them to solve. I make sure that they learn the key concepts and skills which enable them to more easily master the subject material. - Probability theory - Linear algebra - Calculus - Group theory and abstract algebra - Problem solving - Statistical theory - Bayesian statistics - Gauss-Markov theory (heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation) - Linear regression - Instrumental variables & endogeneity - Moderating and mediating variables - Parametric and non-parametric statistics - Panel data modelling - Survival models - Binary choice models (logistic regression & probit models) - Time-series modelling (VAR/SVAR/VECM, ARMA, ARCH/GARCH models) - Programming with Stata, Eviews, R, SPSS, Matlab, Python, etc. - Machine learning algorithms (clustering, SVM, random forests, neural networks, etc.) - Financial mathematics - Business mathematics & statistics - Linear programming & mathematical optimisation (including AMPL programming)

Perfect! Really enjoyed my stats tutoring with Ben. He was an extremely skilled and patient teacher, teaching me everything from the very basics, so that I could complete my Research in Marketing module as part of my MSc. Good student just starting out in her statistics Ph.D. She needed some help understanding some papers on sliced inverse regression (a dimension reduction technique) for time series analysis, and some help with R programming.
She was not afraid to ask basic questions while I went through the theory & examples on the whiteboard, making sure that she understood every step.

Ben gave me a good grounding in basic probability theory and also helped me with the more advanced stuff throughout the course.
