My teaching methodology is to focus on the areas of weakness first and work on those areas until the student feels confident at these skills. I think that spaced repetition is key for helping scientific and mathematical concepts to become retained in the long term memory. I believe that a deep and intensive look at each area of weakness will provide students with an opportunity to analyse what aspects of the subject they actually find difficult. Sometimes a student's foundation knowledge is not secure, meaning they need to solidify their understanding of the basic topics before then advancing to the more difficult ones. My belief is that each student is different and will need to be tutored using a different approach. When tutoring, I like to give the student a baseline assessment testing everything they should know and then use that, as well as a discussion with the student, to create a tutoring plan tailored to the student's academic needs.
