About Avery
Hi! I not only have had 5 years of tutoring experience in mathematics, but I have also been tutored in the past! This gives me a unique perspective that helps me realize what is most important to foster understanding; creating a stress free environment that allows for growth while keeping the goals of the student at the center of my tutoring. I work as a math tutor for the University of Tennessee through the Math Place, which has greatly shaped the way that I approach tutoring. The Math Place is essentially a community that comes together to learn, help one another, and build an understanding of math. It has helped to breakdown the stereotype that you only need a tutor if you are failing, instead, it reinforces the idea that, everyone can increase their understanding. It takes the possibly intimidating situation, and turns it into a highly positive one. This idea has influenced my personal view of tutoring and I strive to keep these ideals in my private tutoring sessions. Outside of tutoring I am a full time Biomedical Engineering student and "gym junkie," I also enjoy baking, taking care of my 32 plants and playing ping-pong.

I am very passionate about tutoring and I firmly believe that anyone, at any level, can benefit greatly from having a tutor. One of my biggest goals when it comes to tutoring is to tailor the experience to the individual; for me this means meeting a student where they are and working together to make goals, exposing students to different learning methods in order to find the best fit, as well as creating flexible non-stressful schedules. Typically, I have potential students bring in work that they may be struggling with, and we work through it together. I will work through a problem step by step, while leaving time for questions, then I will have the student work through similar problems, leading, while I provide any help if needed, from there we can work together to create a plan to best foster growth and understanding. I work with students in k-12 as well as university students in 100 and 200 level math courses with an emphasis on calculus. I am excited to learn together!
