About Fergus
I'm a first-year medical student at the University of Sydney. I completed a Bachelor of Psychology there too, with first-class honors and a uni medal, which required a lot of essay writing and paper reading (which definitely helped for S1 and S2).
I have almost 7 years tutoring experience—5 as an HSC English tutor, and coming up on 2 as a GAMSAT tutor. I have tutored a dozen GAMSAT students so far (reviews on StudentVIP).
I love tutoring and teaching in general, and I know how difficult it is to get into medicine and dentistry, so I'd be keen to help anyone realize that goal no matter your skill level. A big part of preparing is narrowing your focus down onto a few set strategies, and building your confidence week to week. There is not much that separates a mark that gets you in from a mark that doesn't, so back yourself.

Sessions can be 60 or 90 minutes. Happy to do group tutoring for up to 4 people. Can have a 15-30 minute free chat before starting so I can get a sense of where you're at, you can ask me any questions, and then we can hit the ground running in the first proper session.
The outline of my typical approach to GAMSAT tutoring is below. However, it's important to stress: each student is different. You may just be looking for a one-off session, or maybe you want a more prescriptive, long-term approach to either section. Either way, more than happy to accommodate your preferences.
Generally, the first step is identifying weak and strong areas in your exam performance. Some students hate poetry, some struggle to come up with interesting essay ideas. Everybody is different, but no problem is unique.
Once that's established, a typical routine may look something like this.
S1:
First, we do close reading practice of different text types—honing in on paragraph, sentence and word-level meanings—before exploring MCQ strategy. From this approach, we generate a list of heuristics and tips for S1 that can guide you through your prep. Then we move to performing this process under timed conditions.
S2:
This is about addressing the three foundations of a good GAMSAT essay:
1. Coherent structure
2. (Semi-)original ideas
3. Exhibiting the qualities of a good health profession
We will explore each component, whilst also addressing any language-specific problems you may be concerned with.
More broadly, I find it useful to center your approach to the GAMSAT around 'metacognition'—the ability to think about your thinking. A major part of my approach to all 3 sections is doing exactly this: not just answering the question, but assessing the quality of the reasoning behind your answer; not just coming up with an idea for an essay, but questioning what assumptions you are making and whether you're missing a clear counterpoint.

Details
$100 per hour includes any essays you want marked + any questions you have outside tutoring sessions (via email or text). Also includes access to my S2 practice essays and a reading list of texts similar to (or included in) previous GAMSATs.
For groups of 2, it's $60 per person. Groups of 3-4, $50 per person.
I haven't included any package discounts in my listing but message me to work something out - I'd rather know your particular circumstance so that I can plan a few weeks ahead with that in mind, as opposed to a blanket package discount.
