About Matt
I've been tutoring for seven years now—both in-person and online. I earned my bachelor’s in physics (with mathematics and chemistry minors) from the University of Idaho in 2018. I find no greater joy than helping others reach those "ah-ha!" moments while solving math and physics problems. I'm grateful for any opportunity to help someone achieve their academic goals. It's important work! I'm most experienced tutoring any first and second year college physics or math subjects (excluding discrete math, never took that one) but can also help with more advanced subjects like numerical methods, calculus II & III, ordinary differential equations, linear algebra, and calculus-based physics in general. When I'm tutoring, I'm in a compassionate, caring mind-state of humble service and support. I genuinely enjoy time spent helping students solve problems in mathematics/physics. I let students lead each lesson—unless they're unsure where to start/what to study. I have worked with plenty of college students to build study plans, sift through curricula, and build healthy coping habits to handle the mental/emotional costs of studying. I check in with students after every step in a solution/explanation, without using terminology like, "Does that make sense?". I don't focus the discussion on whether you're 'getting it' or not. Instead, I ask what you think, where you're at, or if you see any problems/contradictions in the steps I've just shared.

For online sessions, I typically share my screen and pull up a digital whiteboard, while referring to electronic texts, snipping useful excerpts and pasting them alongside the steps of example solutions. You can come in with problems you'd like help with, or we can figure out where to start together, pulling problems from textbooks and other electronic resources. Feel free to come in unprepared!

Matt's new to this platform, but my takeaway from working with him on Takelessons.com is as follows:
His teaching is adaptive and exploratory. He is very respectful; he creates a shared mental space with you where he listens attentively and intuitively and fosters an exploratory environment. He surprises learners with his flexibility and, having followed their ideas, helps to situate them within a broader framework.
Matt collaborates with you—he treats his interactions as a dynamic exchange. His talent (albeit discreet) is to align himself with your natural intellectual rhythm to engage you at your core level of thinking. He will honour your individual mentality, as he shaped and sharpened his approach to my strengths and highlighted potentials in my perceived weaknesses. But he'll teach with humility; he is generous, and he is patient.
Matt is curious. He explores the abstract nature of ideas and grasps and blends them with invaluable insights.
He will trust you, the learner, fully—sponsor and train your curiosity. (He listens attentively, not only to your words but intuitively to where thoughts may lead). He is dynamically apt and engaged by mental processes.
Would I recommend him?
Yes, I'd recommend him for any subject within his aptitude, but this recommendation glows from my experience with Matt as my Maths tutor.Matt tutored my son in Calculus 1 for an engineering degree. Due to his knowledge and assistance, my son learned the skills needed to have success in Calculus 1 and go in to do very well in Calculus 2 and 3. I am so thankful to Matt for helping my son get through a very difficult class. I would highly recommend him as a tutor.
Matt gives it his best every lesson at a very affordable price. He helped me pass my calculus class and was honest when he needed to get back to me on a topic.
