About Peter
I have worked as a freelance musician for 40 years. Initially as a violinist and violin teacher, then as a conductor, composer and music editor (I am currently editing music by Ethel Smyth). I have taught conducting classes to students of a wide variety of ages and backgrounds for many years in London (and beyond) and successfully aided many private students, with either general conducting instruction or in working on specific pieces of music.

We always begin with you: where are you starting from? Where do you want to get to? I am highly experienced at uncovering what a student needs to do to be an effective conductor, and in aiding the application of that understanding. All levels and ages taught - beginners need some musical experience/background, and advanced students can elect to study using Max Rudolf's 'The Grammar of Conducting'. Private lessons only, usually of one hour, but longer is possible.

I participated in several conducting courses which Peter organized. Apart from being a warm human being, Peter is an efficient and effective teacher. He is relaxed and empathic and creates a safe learning environment. At the same time, his comments are to the point, and often even spot-on: they are tailored to what you as a student need – with your level and experience and with respect for your own musical ideas. His approach to music and his musical problem solving skills clearly draw on his broad experience as a violinist, a conductor and a composer. Somehow Peter also manages to gather very nice and interesting people around him, which greatly enhances the learning experience – not to mention the fact that it is also a nice way to make new friends!
I have taken part in several of Peter's weekend conducting courses over the past few years, and have gained a great deal in both competence and confidence from working with him. He doesn't try to make his students conduct like him; rather, he helps each of us, as individuals, to move on from where we currently are, giving suggestions as to how we might work more effectively with the orchestra. And that is another great thing about Peter's courses: on the Sundays we work with a professional orchestra. with each student getting at least 45 minutes solo podium time. For the rest of the time one learns almost as much from watching the other students and listening to Peter's advice to them.
I have also had a couple of individual lessons with Peter, to prepare for specific performances.
I can thoroughly recommend Peter as a conducting tutor.Peter is a very good conducting teacher. He used to organize very good conducting week-end with a professional orchestra. It was very useful.
Peter is a wonderful teacher for conductors of any level.
I have had the great pleasure of participating in a number of his courses in London and have always found him to be both inspiring and efficient. He has a huge knowledge of both conducting technique and music in general. Also he has an incredible ability to see what each student needs, and all his teachings are done with great kindness.
I highly recommend him!I met Peter a few years ago and took two masterclasses with him in London! It was a very formative experience for me and a wonderful life lesson!
Peter is an expert teacher in the field of conducting, and his advice and encouragement were always motivated by a genuine desire to help us progress.
And what is rather rare in conducting, it never involves humiliation; Peter is too intelligent and generous for that.
I would add that, in my opinion, he has the right approach to conducting: respect and devotion for the musicians, in-depth knowledge of scores and the musical context, in order to seek to express the composer's original intention.I have attended a conducting course with peter Fender and found Peter to be an excellent teacher. Although I play guitar and keyboards I had no experience of conducting and found the course so effective that it encouraged me to compose 4 short string pieces for violin, viola and cello.
Thank you so much Peter.I went to Peter who gave me some introductory conducting training for my orchestral compositions for library music. Peter was great at explaining the basics and helping me practically in starting to conduct. Quite frankly I would have been going round in circles without Peter’s excellent guidance and tuition. The best few hours of training I’ve ever invested in and a very nice chap too!
Peter was an incredible help as I prepared for my first conducting date. He’s highly knowledgeable, kind, and clear, building my confidence while covering everything I needed. Relaxed yet focused, and unbelievably good value for the experience he brings! I'd definitely recommend him for any level.
Peter is a superb teacher who combines excellent teaching skills with insight and kindness. He has a fantastic
ability to see exactly what's needed and tailor his advice accordingly. Peter also brings a huge wealth of genuine, practical experience gained in many different conducting environments and truly understands what musicians need from a conductor. I learnt huge amounts from Peter and would highly recommend him as an excellent teacher.View more recommendations
