About Joe
I studied at Eton College, where I was a scholar, then went to the US to attend Duke University, where I majored in computer science and biology. After that, I worked as a neuroscience researcher and a software engineer. I taught at university, and have always loved teaching. I learn deeply myself by explaining concepts clearly to others, and I love to share my passion for the profundity of everything students learn in school, from cellular biology to statistical testing. I loved school, but found it very difficult. Part of that was probably due to ADHD, with which I was only recently diagnosed. So I really empathise with a wide range of academic and learning problems students can face, as well as the many limitations of modern school life. I try to take all this experience and understanding, and leverage it to make learning as joyous and straightforward as possible.

My approach is based on two basic premises: (1) That the things my students need to learn are *actually* fascinating and beautifully important (rather than dry and pointless, as some teachers allow students to believe). I endeavour to help my students to discover *why* what they are learning is important and interesting, and this never fails to improve performance and learning. (2) That my students can learn anything, with the right personalisation and confidence-building regimen. I always try to deeply identify my student's level of skill and understanding, and tailor learning to build them up brick-by-brick. This is the magic of personal tutoring, and it's always at the front of my mind. I offer lessons as short as 45mins or as long as 2hrs. I generally recommend 60 or 90mins. I offer biology, computer science, and mathematics lessons for GCSE and A-Level students. I tailor my teaching to my students' particular curricula and needs.
