About Christopher
Christopher Healey (PhD) writes music that has been described as “a perfect mix of intelligence and humanity” (Zoe Knighton) and praised for its ability to “attractively weave disparate musical styles into a sonorous tapestry” (ClassikOn). A musical storyteller, his voice is broad and inclusive, ranging from transfixingly tender to haunting and macabre. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Composition (Class I Honours) and a PhD in Composition from the University of Queensland. He has studied with composers Gerard Brophy, Robert Davidson and American composer, Daron Hagen. Christopher has also been mentored by esteemed Australian composers, Carl Vine, Christopher Gordon and Holly Harrison, as well as American composers, Nico Muhly, Christopher Cerrone, and Missy Mazzoli. Commissions and performances have been sought by numerous professional ensembles throughout Australia as well as China, France, Holland, and the USA. Christopher’s catalogue of works currently includes nearly one hundred compositions. He has been commissioned by highly regarded organisations and ensembles such as Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Omega Ensemble, Camerata QCO, 4MBS, the BRON Saxophone Quartet, BoB - Best of Brass, Ensemble Françaix, Ensemble Fabrique, Divisi Chamber Singers, the Nickson Quartet and many more. Christopher’s music has been included in a recent album release for ABC Classic, as part of Camerata QCO’s new album, Sunshine Sounds. Christopher’s professional highlights for 2022 include: - Selected for Flinders Quartet’s Ascend program, which resulted in the workshopping, performance and recording of Circe. - Selected for Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Cybec Commission. - Selected for Omega Ensemble’s CoLab Commission. - Commissioned to write a 20-minute oratorio for Divisi Chamber Singers & period instruments. - Performances by Bendigo Symphony Orchestra and Rockhampton Symphony Orchestra. Lessons can take many different forms depending on what you need, from working on AMEB Theory work, practicing harmony and counterpoint exercises, or working on YOUR music to make it the best it can be. I love helping students express themselves through their own composition and provide guidance and help so that you can learn by doing, rather than by talking about it. We can cover anything from inspiration to structure to orchestration and much more.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Chris has been teaching music theory, composition and trumpet at the Parkville Music School for more than 5 years now, and has helped more than 80 students prepare for AMEB examinations and develop their compositional voices.
Christopher is an excellent composer and can explain pretty much anything of any complexity in a way that can be understood by students (or anybody just interested in music even without a musical background). I've successfully worked with him many times and couldn't recommended him more highly.
I have supervised Christopher's music composition PhD, as a senior lecturer in music. He has highly advanced skills in music notation, to the most sophisticated level, and is an excellent communicator. You will be in the best hands if you want to improve your skills in reading music notation, whether as a complete beginner or as a professional.
Chris is very passionate about music and communicates very clearly in his teaching. Highly recommended.
