About Laura
I earned my MFA and MA from the University of Idaho, in Moscow, and taught English and different types of composition and literature for 13 years at Washington State University, in Pullman. During my time at WSU, I designed, delivered, and assessed many writing courses--when I totaled it all up recently, it evened out to about 3,800 students I've taught the writing process to. It works in tutoring situations too. My approach to responding to your work would be to read it over, hopefully with you, and first talk about the structure of your main idea... like, is it enough to catch the reader's attention. We'd assess and discuss strategies for making it stronger OR, maybe moving onto some other main feature of an essay, like evidence or source work. One of the best strategies for strong writing is strong reading of our own work, our own words...getting a feel for what could be improved for an audience. Having the idea that writing isn't usually done in one step, but in multiple steps, sometimes backward ones (just a few sometimes---but worth it), can really relieve the student writer of a lot of stress. I like to help with that.
