About Peter
I’ve been working as a College Professor for the past 16 years; teaching a large variety of Civil Engineering and Construction courses. Prior to working in academics, I spent 8 years working throughout Latin America on water and sanitation projects as a Peace Corps volunteer, USAID-Honduras program director, and engineer for several non-profit organizations.
My true passion is teaching! Through my teaching experiences as a college teaching assistant, high school English teacher (Peace Corps), Peace Corps trainer, and college professor I’ve learned two important lessons:
• Most students learn best when they can see how each lesson’s content (theories, concepts, examples) relate to real-life applications.
• Students prefer an active learning environment with hands-on learning experiences.
I emphasize these two concepts in every lesson. While hands-on learning can be challenging in an online environment, I learned to use technology like the Lightboard (a clear chalkboard that is lit up internally with LEDs so that the writing glows) to make this happen. My unique experience as both a university (engineering) professor and practicing civil engineer, make me a UNIQUE instructor/tutor:
• I have LOTS of experience working with students from various academic and cultural backgrounds.
• I can teach/tutor a large variety of math, science, and engineering courses.
• I use a variety of teaching approaches and am good at adjusting my teaching style based on the student’s learning style.
• I can cover both the theoretical (academic) and practical (real-life) aspects of each lesson.
• I’m also fluent in Spanish for any Spanish speaking students.
