About Samuel
About Me
I’m Samuel, a Cognitive Development Specialist and licensed high school teacher with extensive experience supporting students in reading, writing, and executive functioning. I work daily with middle and high school students in both general and special education settings, helping them navigate academic challenges and build the skills needed for long-term success.
My background includes working with a wide range of learners, including students who struggle with focus, organization, and confidence in their academic abilities. I specialize in breaking complex tasks—especially writing and reading comprehension—into clear, manageable steps so students can make consistent progress.
I approach my work with professionalism, structure, and high expectations, while also creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and taking risks. Families can expect clear communication, thoughtful instruction, and a focus on measurable growth over time.
My goal is not just to help students improve their grades, but to help them develop the skills and confidence to work independently and succeed beyond our sessions.

My Approach as a Cognitive Development Specialist
My work goes beyond traditional tutoring. I help students develop the underlying thinking skills that drive success in reading, writing, and learning overall. Rather than focusing only on completing assignments, I teach students how to process information, organize their thoughts, and express ideas with clarity and confidence.
Teaching Method and Techniques
My approach is structured, explicit, and highly interactive. I use:
Step-by-step writing frameworks to help students build clear, organized paragraphs and essays
Guided reading strategies that strengthen comprehension, inference, and critical thinking
Executive functioning coaching to improve focus, task initiation, and follow-through
Modeling and think-alouds so students can see exactly how strong thinking and writing is done
Targeted feedback loops to ensure students understand not just what to fix, but how to improve
Students are not passive—they are actively engaged in thinking, responding, and building skills in real time.
A Typical Lesson
Each lesson follows a clear structure:
Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Quick reflection, vocabulary, or a short writing prompt to activate thinking
Skill Focus (15–20 minutes)
Direct instruction on a specific skill (e.g., writing strong topic sentences, analyzing text evidence, organizing ideas)
Guided Practice (20–25 minutes)
Students apply the skill with support, using structured frameworks and feedback
Reflection and Application (5–10 minutes)
Students explain their thinking and identify how to apply the skill independently
This structure ensures students are consistently building both skill and self-awareness.
What Sets Me Apart
I teach students how to think, not just what to do
I combine literacy instruction with executive functioning, which is often the missing piece
I use repeatable systems so students can succeed independently, not just during sessions
I bring experience as a classroom teacher working with a wide range of learners, including those who need additional support
I focus on building confidence and ownership, helping students see themselves as capable and in control of their learning
Who My Lessons Are For
My lessons are designed for:
Upper elementary, middle school, and high school students
Students who struggle with reading comprehension, writing, or staying organized
Students who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to start assignments
Students preparing for more advanced academic expectations who need stronger foundational skills
I also work especially well with students who benefit from structure, clarity, and consistent support, including those with attention or learning differences.
