About Joshua
My mother taught me how to play chess as a very small child, but 6 years ago chess became a great passion of mine. My first big opportunity came in December of 2021, when I played for Ireland U18s at the European Youth Chess Championships. Since then I have competed at several prestigious events such as Drogheda Masters, Gonzaga Masters and the Irish Championship main event in Ennis 2025.
As a student of English and French in Trinity College Dublin, I aspire to one day be a professor of English. I am not only passionate about chess, but also about teaching people and helping them to reach their potential, and chess coaching allows me to combine these interests. Therefore it would be my pleasure to assist you in your journey of improvement in the beautiful game of 64 squares.

Hello! It would be my pleasure to coach you in the beautiful game of chess. With the right approach, I believe that anyone can learn and improve. While general advice from YouTube videos etc can sometimes be useful, interactive lessons and personalized suggestions from an experienced player are the most effective way to get better at lightning speed!
Whether you are a casual player who wants to beat your friends and family, or a tournament player looking to climb the rating ladder, my approach will be tailored to your current level and your goals. I am happy to work with students of all ages, having coached both kids and adults in the past.
For beginners, in our lesson we will talk through your thought process during a game, and I will give you a starter pack of some of the most powerful ideas and plans so that you can start crushing your opponents!
For slightly more advanced players, I will look at some of your games before our lesson, I will select some games for us to talk about and make notes at the key moments. Then we will go through them together and I will give personalized suggestions.
At your request, we can focus more on any area such as openings, tactics, positional play, calculation or endgames. In Irish chess, I am known as an opening specialist, with opponents frequently choosing offbeat options because they are afraid of my preparation! So if people would like opening recommendations based on their style, I am more than happy to help.
Typically, lessons are 1 hour long. This will give us enough time to go through the content thoroughly without rushing or stressing. Chess is an enjoyable game, and I will never pressure people to feel like they must come up with the right answer or else they are a bad player (many coaches are like this in my experience...)
