About Kurt
I earned a bachelor's in chemistry from Connecticut College then my master's degree in inorganic chemistry from Yale University, and I've had a couple of papers published from my research. However, it was in graduate school that I found my love for teaching while I was TA'ing. I found that I enjoyed that much more than the research and so I got into teaching at a private boarding high school in New England. I enjoyed that experience, but I missed college-level chemistry and have shifted into teaching at a competitive college in my home state. What makes me excited about teaching is the puzzle of figuring out the best way to relay these chemistry concepts that I find so interesting. I truly believe that with the proper explanation, anyone can learn the chemistry concepts that are taught in most courses. I also think that being interested in the material makes all the difference in helping students WANT to learn it, so I try to include examples of chemistry topics in the real world whenever I can.

My first goal as a tutor is to find out what a student is struggling with. Some students just need to adjust their approach to their studies to be able to find success. Sometimes there are just difficult units that they are struggling with content-wise. It's only after learning what's holding a student back that we can make a plan for improvement. Each student seeks out a tutor with a unique set of struggles, but I know that everyone can learn chemistry if we find an approach that suits them.
