About Mary
Growing up in the southeast USA, I had a little bit of an accent. When I was old enough to become aware of myself and others, I realized that having a Southern accent and using different slang/vernacular put me in a different place in life. This caused me to change the way I spoke entirely but I have never been able to rid myself of "the Kentucky" of it all. This used to be a point of shame for me, but now I am quite proud of where I come from and the way I speak. I want all of my students to know that although I am a native English speaker, I have been there. I understand the insecurity and anxiety caused by speaking differently than my peers and feeling as though I am lesser than because of it. I'm no life coach, but I am willing and able to help my students gain knowledge and confidence in their English ability.
