About Joanna

Hi! I'm Joanna, a certified English teacher with 10+ years of classroom experience and 8 years as a professional legal writer and researcher. For more than a decade, my career has centered on one thing: helping people learn, grow, and succeed.

As a middle school English teacher, I've worked with students of all ability levels to strengthen reading comprehension, writing, grammar, and critical thinking. My legal background has further developed my skills in research, persuasive writing, editing, and analytical reasoning, allowing me to help students build the strong communication skills they need for school, standardized tests, college, and beyond.

I strive to create a supportive, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and celebrating progress. My goal is not only to help students improve academically but also to help them gain the confidence and skills to succeed independently.

Whether you're preparing for the ACT or SAT, writing a college admissions essay, improving your grades, or simply looking to become a more confident reader and writer, I'll meet you where you are and create lessons tailored to your goals and learning style.

Why Choose Me?

Looking for SAT/ACT Prep or general reading & writing support?
I specialize in helping students strengthen the reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, analytical thinking, and writing skills that lead to higher standardized test scores. Whether you're aiming for college admissions, scholarship opportunities, or simply greater confidence on test day, I'll create a personalized plan to help you reach your goals.

Beyond standardized test preparation, I provide individualized tutoring in English Language Arts for middle school, high school, college, and adult learners. Every student learns differently, so every lesson I teach is tailored to the individual—not the textbook.

My Teaching Approach

Learning isn't one-size-fits-all, and tutoring shouldn't be either. I begin by identifying each student's strengths, areas for growth, learning style, and academic goals. Whether a student needs help catching up, staying ahead, preparing for an exam, or building confidence, I'll design lessons specifically to meet their needs.

I believe students learn best when they understand **why** something works, not just how to memorize it. My lessons are interactive, encouraging students to ask questions, think critically, and develop problem-solving skills they can rely on after our sessions end.

Depending on the student's goals, lessons may include:

* ACT/SAT Reading, Writing, and English preparation
* Reading comprehension and analytical thinking
* Grammar, vocabulary, and writing mechanics
* Essay writing, revision, and organization
* Homework support and study strategies
* Guided practice with immediate feedback
* Test-taking strategies and time management
* Targeted skill-building using practice questions and real-world examples

I continually adjust instruction based on each student's progress so every session remains engaging, productive, and focused on measurable growth.

A Typical Lesson

A typical lesson begins with a brief review of previous material and any questions the student has. From there, we'll focus on one or two targeted learning objectives through direct instruction, guided practice, and independent application. We'll finish by reviewing key takeaways, discussing any remaining challenges, and setting goals for the next session. As students progress, lessons evolve to reflect their growing confidence and changing needs.

What Sets Me Apart

I'm a Maryland State certified English teacher with 10+ years of classroom experience, and more than 8 years of professional writing and research experience. That combination allows me to teach not only academic content but also the critical thinking, reading, writing, and analytical skills students need to succeed in school, on standardized tests, and beyond.

I've worked with students of varying academic abilities, from those who need extra support to advanced learners seeking additional challenges. I'm committed to creating a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, make mistakes without fear, and develop confidence in their abilities. My goal isn't simply to improve grades or test scores, it's to help students become independent, confident learners.

Whether you're preparing for an important exam, improving your grades, or becoming a stronger reader and writer, I'd love to help you achieve your goals.
