About Valerie
I have been teaching over 22 years in a public school and I've tutored over 5 years. I've taught grades Kindergarten to 5th grade. I've taught various elementary level subjects. I have a second certification in ESL (English is a Second Language). I am a calm and compassionate teacher. I can read students' understanding, fears the student may be experiencing. I am a great listener and very approachable. I don't believe in highlighting what a student doesn't know, but to focus and build from what the student knows or learns.

Since I am a classroom teacher, the Lesson Plans that I prepare for my classes are not personalized to each student. However, planning a lesson for a class or one tutee, I set a goal as to what I want the class or tutee to learn. Next, I introduce the topic that I am going to be teaching. I ask the students, "what do you wonder about?" this specific topic. I will inquire what the student wants to learn about that subject. I finally set a goal for the class or tutee that checks for comprehension. It may be an activity or writing assignment that allows me to check on their understanding and comprehension. I constantly monitor the students' understanding. I want to see if the student/students can apply the strategies I've taught them to check on their comprehension and ability to problem solve. I like to have students work in small groups. Tutoring that would not be the case. Students must be able to take what they learn and apply it to different scenarios. Tests and quizzes are also used to check on comprehension. I try to relate the subject that is being taught to real-life issues that are of interest to the student. Applying the skill in a fun activity is a great and fun way to learn and to check on the student's understanding. Next,
