I myself have benefitted from tutoring. My Italian study programme was delivered entirely by tutors, giving me a clear and personal understanding of what makes a tutor excellent.
To achieve the optimal results the best tutors do the following:
- Understand the needs and circumstances of each individual.
- Empathetic listening is critical
- Understand the curriculum and pedagogic techniques the pupil’s school uses
- Lay out a clear programme with milestones
- Check in periodically with the pupil and their parents and guardians to make sure that progress is made
- Combining sympathy with clarity about desired outcomes / standard to reach is very important
- Make it fun!
