About Carleigh
Hello!
I'm Dr. Carleigh Slater, a qualified primary teacher with over eight years of teaching experience in both the UK and the United States and a PhD in Education from the University of Edinburgh. Throughout my career, I have been passionate about helping children develop the confidence, skills, and curiosity they need to succeed both in and beyond the classroom.
I currently teach in a London primary preparatory school and have extensive experience supporting pupils across KS1 and KS2 in English, mathematics, reading, writing, science, SATs preparation, and 7+ and 11+ entrance examinations. My teaching is evidence-informed, engaging, and carefully tailored to each child's individual strengths, learning style, and goals.
Parents value my calm, patient, and encouraging approach. I believe children learn best when they feel supported, challenged, and confident enough to take risks in their learning. Whether your child needs help catching up, preparing for important assessments, or extending their learning beyond the classroom, I provide personalised lessons that build both academic success and self-confidence.
Alongside my classroom experience, my doctoral research focused on improving education and supporting children, giving me a deep understanding of effective teaching practices and child development. I hold an Enhanced DBS certificate, QTS, and am committed to creating a safe, positive, and enjoyable learning environment where every child can thrive.

Every child learns differently, and my tutoring is built around understanding how each student learns best. I begin by identifying a child's strengths, areas for development, and learning goals before creating personalised lessons that are engaging, challenging, and enjoyable. My aim is not only to improve academic performance but also to develop confidence, independence, and a genuine enjoyment of learning.
As a qualified primary teacher with over eight years of teaching experience in both the UK and the United States, and a PhD in Education from the University of Edinburgh, I use evidence-informed teaching strategies that are proven to help children make meaningful progress. My lessons combine direct instruction, guided practice, questioning, retrieval practice, and interactive activities to ensure pupils fully understand new concepts before moving on. I regularly assess progress and adapt my teaching to meet each child's individual needs.
Lessons are typically 60 minutes long, although 30- and 45-minute sessions are also available for younger learners or those who benefit from shorter, more focused sessions. Each lesson includes clear learning objectives, opportunities for practice, constructive feedback, and, where appropriate, preparation for school assessments or entrance examinations.
I specialise in tutoring KS1 and KS2 pupils in English, Mathematics, Reading, Writing, Science, SATs preparation, and 11+ entrance examinations. I also have extensive experience supporting children with English as an Additional Language (EAL) and adapting lessons for pupils with a range of learning needs and abilities.
Whether your child needs help building confidence, catching up, preparing for exams, or stretching themselves beyond the classroom curriculum, my goal is to create a supportive environment where they feel encouraged, challenged, and proud of their progress.
