About Dzifa

Hello, I am Dzifa, an award-winning and widely published poet, playwright, journalist and educator with years of experience in many aspects of teaching English language and literature to students at all levels and from all backgrounds. I am also a creative writing teacher who teaches poetry, prose and drama. I’m an expert in teaching Shakespeare and enjoy making it less impenetrable to the ordinary reader. Since 2002 I’ve designed, devised and facilitated creative and education initiatives utilising poetry and other literary arts in schools, universities and community settings. Mentoring adults in higher education and within the creative industries, and working with children in primary and secondary schools, I teach a wide range of lectures, seminars, workshops, masterclasses, after-school sessions, one-to-one lessons and bespoke long-term projects spanning poetry, storytelling, creative writing, performance, theatre, songwriting, reportage, arts journalism, travel writing, academic skills, fiction, creative non-fiction and criticism. As such, I understand both the creative process and the rigours of academic and professional writing. I’ve worked with many under-represented groups including refugees, women, Global Majority people, SEND and ESOL learners and collaborated with scientists, graffiti artists, filmmakers, musicians, composers and sculptors to deliver workshops. National and international clients have included: Curtis Brown Creative, The Royal Geographical Society, English PEN, University of the Arts, Orleans House Gallery, Southbank Centre, the British Library, University of London, local councils all over the country and the National Youth Theatre. I also work as a freelance writer/editor and regularly contribute book, theatre and music reviews, interviews and features to the arts pages of the Financial Times, the Guardian, the Telegraph, the Times Literary Supplement and other publications. I have made hundreds of visits to schools and literature festivals to run workshops and give talks. In addition, I have worked as a poetry and criticism mentor, reader/editor at The Literary Consultancy, a guest lecturer at several universities and a judge for several literary prizes. I also have a Master's degree in Text & Performance from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and Birkbeck, University of London.

I tailor my lessons to the specific needs of each student and like to design bespoke class structures to suit my students’ learning styles, needs and requirements. My approach is to empower all my students with as much agency as possible in how they learn. I want my students to feel fearless so I’m dedicated to engendering a safe and exciting learning environment in which students are motivated and enthusiastic. Teaching is important to me because I love enabling people of all ages and backgrounds to become better writers, readers, listeners and talkers. Every writer’s sensibilities are unique and nothing makes me happier than when I see my students putting what they have learned from me into practice. I am DBS cleared and have received Safeguarding training. Tutorials: I offer one-hour-long tutorials on Zoom or Microsoft Teams in sessions designed according to the needs of the student. This can take the form of a bespoke one-hour lesson within the session or a detailed analysis of a piece of the student’s work that has been emailed to me no later than two days before the session. Flexible Learning: Some students have access needs that mean they may not be comfortable with face-to-face video calls or they may simply prefer tuition by correspondence because it suits their schedules better. Flexible learning is especially helpful in this instance because the tuition and mentoring is carried out in writing but otherwise follows the same form as the Zoom tutorials. I offer a no-obligations 15-minute initial consultation where I’m happy to answer any questions. Note on bookings: bookings need to be made a minimum of 48 hours before the lesson. As is this site policy, cancellations within 24 hours cannot be refunded. Creative Writing Services Manuscript Assessments: Are you writing a novel, a short story, a children’s book, non-fiction, a script or screenplay, short stories or poetry? Would you like guidance and support for self-editing and structural advice about basic narrative elements? Are you keen to understand what you’re doing well and what can be improved? Do you want to better understand the nuances of characterisation, plot, pace, clarity, dialogue, settings, theme, credibility and language? I am a highly skilled editor who has worked with hundreds of writers to get their manuscripts in the best possible shape at Curtis Brown Creative and The Literary Consultancy and I can provide you too with an honest, detailed and professional appraisal of your manuscript. I welcome all approaches and respect that all writing is hard-won, and commit to giving all my clients’ manuscripts, no matter what stage of development, a respectful, constructive, critical response at a high level of engagement. The service includes: - A written feedback report - Honest, non-misleading, constructive assessment - Understanding of where the work currently sits in relation to the commercial literary marketplace - Practical development advice for next steps - A four-week turnaround Please note that manuscript assessments are costed by word count and fees start at £300. For a higher fee, I also offer a ‘quick turnaround’ service where you will receive feedback within 7 - 10 working days. Editor One-to-One: Taking place on Zoom, this is a service in which I provide face-to-face feedback to writers anywhere in the world. Based on 2500 words of prose or 2 - 3 poems, you get: - A one-hour Zoom meeting - A one-page synopsis or short summary of your writing project - An audio recording of your session Copy and Line Editing: This is a more rigorous style of edit than an assessment alone and it focuses on ensuring the language adheres to the relevant style guide and is free from errors. A copy-edit will look at and aim to correct: - Misspellings, punctuation, grammar or syntax - Font and typeface, layout, page numbering, tables, indexes - Line breaks, indents, headings, footers and titles - Tense, capitalisation, hyphenation, style guide decisions e.g., ‘-ise’/’-ize’ usage. For further information on all of the above, please just drop me a line via this site.
