About John
I have taught university Mathematics courses at all levels: from beginning statistics, Precalculus, and Calculus courses to advanced major-level courses in Mathematics, Statistics, and Actuarial Science. I have also taught interdisciplinary STEM courses, not just Math courses.
I have been a University Professor for 30 years and have won teaching awards in each decade of my educational mission. It has been my joy to help thousands of students grow and transform in their educational journeys.
My PhD/doctorate is in the mathematical field of Probability. I have also earned a Master’s degree in Mathematics and a Bachelor’s degree in both English literature and Mathematics.
I have prepared students in Statistics at all levels: introductory (non-Calculus-based), intermediate (for Business, Science, and Social Science students), and advanced (Calculus-based).
I have taught Actuarial Science students for three decades and in the last decade created a full Actuarial major program with coursework for five national actuarial examinations and three validation by educational experience (VEE) courses. All of these courses integrate the software tools of Excel and R. I have also passed national actuarial exams in Probability (P/1) and Financial Mathematics (FM/2).
I have dozens of publications, presentations, and book chapters sharing educational research on how students best learn mathematical concepts. I have presented my research results at national and international conferences.

I use explorations, real-world applications, and technology to ground understanding of mathematical, statistical, and quantitative concepts.
I have taught university students of all levels for 30 years. My mission as an educator is to reach all students and to help them transform to their best selves.
I do not believe the “myth of the Math person.” This mistaken idea says that only the gifted understand mathematical concepts. Anyone can excel with the right guide/mentor and hard work.
