Professor Shane, or Bob, has been one of the best professors I've had in my time as a screenwriter- and it doesn't come from an obsession with structure or keeping up with the dailies, but by giving writers freedom and meeting them at whatever level they're at. Being able to challenge Bob and being able to discuss failures in my own work has been one of the most thrilling experiences I've had as a writer, and I've been looking for that same level of vigor since.

I had Bob Shayne as my screenwriting and advanced screenwriting professor at California Lutheran University. I also attended one of his extracurricular writing workshops. He also helped me get into my masters program at the Seattle Film Institute. He is by far the best screenwriting professor I've had. He is able to deliver valuable critique and instruction without ever coming across rude or adversarial which is an uncommon skill to find in anyone teaching an art form. He is a good teacher who looks for talent in his students and gives them opportunities to for them to take their skills further.

Bob was a wonderful teacher. I could always tell he had a great passion for writing that extends to helping his students as much as possible. He never pushes his own taste onto your story; instead he gives feedback on how to make your unique ideas even better. His notes are always critical and encouraging, the best mix anyone could ever ask for.

Bob is one of the most encouraging, experienced and dependable professors I know. Taking my first feature class with him was an incredible learning experience and served as a fantastic introduction to the material. He is a very honest and straightforward instructor, and it's clear that he cares a lot about the success of your projects. In addition to being a great teacher, Bob is also a strong mentor and checks in with his students outside of school on a regular basis. A wonderful person and professor, I could not recommend Bob Shayne enough.

I have had the honor of being in Bob's feature screenwriting class for my last two semesters. Bob was by far my favorite screenwriting professor due to his invested feedback process with us. I've also had the opportunity to see some of Bob's professional work in process, which has continually impressed me with his creativity and work ethic. He had an astounding field of work in the industry to share various experienced stories with us and prepare us for the evolving workforce. Additionally, you could tell he took great pride in giving us honest and constructive feedback, going so far as to print out our pages and write handwritten notes to help us improve. He greatly enjoys his work as a screenwriter and professor, and feeds my passion and joy for writing while helping me become a better writer and person.

Bob is such a great professor, I really enjoyed his feature screenwriting class and learned so much from it. The professor created a supportive and encouraging environment while still pushing us to think critically about our work. His feedback was always thoughtful, specific, and helpful. I felt like he cared about each student’s voice and growth as a writer.

The class challenged me creatively and helped me better understand structure, character, and writing a feature film. I left his course with more confidence in myself and my writing.
