About Michael

I am an award-winning, published and exhibiting photographer with a passion for helping others discover and develop their photographic abilities.

My photography spans digital, traditional film, instant photography and alternative processes. I particularly enjoy exploring how different cameras, techniques and creative approaches can produce distinctive and compelling images.

In 2026, five of my instant photographs were shortlisted for the Fujifilm House of Photography Award and exhibited in Covent Garden, London. Four further photographs were exhibited at Leica Akademie in Soho. I am also the author of *Colour & Hueless*, a book showcasing my photographic work.

Beyond photography, I have enjoyed a successful professional career involving leadership, communication, mentoring and helping people understand complex subjects. I have also written two professional books. This experience has taught me the importance of patience, clarity and adapting explanations to suit different individuals.

As a tutor, I aim to create a relaxed, supportive and engaging learning environment. I take time to understand each student's interests, experience and ambitions, and I tailor lessons accordingly. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced enthusiast exploring something new, you can expect thoughtful guidance, practical experience and constructive feedback. Students tell me I give them great confidence.

I believe photography should be enjoyable, accessible and rewarding.

Above all, my aim is to help you become a more confident, capable and creative photographer — and to enjoy the process of getting there.

My approach to teaching photography is practical, personalised and creative. I believe that becoming a better photographer is about learning to see, developing confidence and discovering your own photographic style — not simply mastering technical settings.

How I teach - Every lesson is tailored to your experience, interests and objectives. We begin by establishing what you would like to achieve - Better "snaps", mastering equipment or improving composition, or exploring new photographic techniques.

I combine clear explanations with practical exercises, demonstrations and constructive feedback. Where appropriate, we work with your own camera, review your photographs and explore how different approaches can produce more interesting results.

I encourage experimentation and learning through experience. Photography doesn't always have to be technically perfect to be compelling.

What you can learn - I teach digital, traditional film, instant photography, and alternate and experimental methods from fundamental camera skills through to more advanced creative techniques. Depending on your interests, lessons can cover exposure, aperture, shutter speed, focus, composition, lighting, film cameras, vintage equipment, adapted lenses, pinhole photography and alternative photographic processes.

I can also help you develop photographic projects, review your work and build a more distinctive personal style.

Lesson length and format

Lessons are typically 120 minutes for face to face and 60 minutes online, allowing time for explanation, practical photography and feedback. Shorter or longer sessions can be arranged depending on your needs.

Lessons can take place in person, including practical photographic walks, or online where appropriate.

My experience - I have photographed all my life.  I am an award-winning, published and exhibiting photographer working across digital, film, instant and alternative photographic processes.

My photographs have been exhibited at the Fujifilm House of Photography in Covent Garden and at Leica Akademie in Soho, London. I am also the author of the photographic book "Colour & Hueless".

Alongside my photographic practice, I have extensive professional experience communicating complex subjects, working with people at different levels and helping them develop new skills. I bring that experience to my teaching, explaining technical concepts clearly and adapting my approach to the individual.

Who my lessons are for - My lessons are suitable for adults and older teenagers, from complete beginners to intermediate photographers and experienced enthusiasts who want to explore new techniques.

You don't need an expensive camera or specialist equipment. The most important things to bring are curiosity, enthusiasm and a willingness to experiment.
