About James

In order to be an excellent teacher and tutor, it is so important to get to know your student. One of my strongest skills is establishing good rapport with my students by putting them at ease and learning what makes them tick. I mold my teaching techniques to my students' needs, skill levels and personalities. Every student is different, so a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work. As I work with a student, I constantly adjust my teaching based on what I learn about him/her. Except for the very youngest students, I seek their input, which often proves invaluable. The best teachers and professors I had on my way to a very successful career as a writer/author were inspiring. I seek to inspire my students to meet challenges and experience the thrill of learning.

About the lesson

I have been tutoring students from 3 to 74 years old for more than six years. I tutor both remotely and in person. I can provide very strong recommendations from older students and from the parents of younger students. Among my specialties are teaching ESL students, helping high school seniors complete their college applications, and working with Elementary School students on all aspects of English including grammar, spelling, writing, and reading comprehension. Especially with younger students, it is important to make the lessons interesting and even fun, and I use a broad range of materials to keep them engaged. Among the approaches that set me apart from other tutors is how I teach my students the key difference between passive and active reading -- and show them how becoming an active reader makes them a better writer. As an Honors student who double-majored in History and Political Science at one of the nation's top universities, UC-Berkeley, I have advanced skills and knowledge to help students make rapid progress in those topics and related courses. It would be an honor to work with your student, and I deeply appreciate your consideration.

Perfect! James has been a total game-changer for our family. He’s been helping my kids in 2nd and 5th grade, and the progress we’ve seen is incredible. He started by really diving in to evaluate where they each stood individually, which made a huge difference in his approach. He focuses on expanding their general knowledge, which has given them so much more confidence in the classroom and led to a massive improvement in their overall performance.

It’s been a relief to find someone who can connect so well with both ages. My youngest is getting those core skills down, while my 5th grader is handling much tougher work with way less stress. They’re both more motivated and actually hitting their goals now. James is super reliable and just has a way of explaining things that makes everything finally make sense to them.

Perfect! Our family has been incredibly grateful to work with James, who genuinely cares about my son’s well-being and development. He consistently reinforces the positive, helping my son build confidence and see his own strengths.

James truly models lifelong learning, curiosity, and a growth mindset. He openly acknowledges his mistakes and treats them as opportunities for learning. This example has been powerful for my son, who struggles with anxiety and is still developing his voice as a scholar.

Sessions feel engaging, supportive, and purposeful. When we have scheduling quirks, James is incredibly flexible and responsive. My son looks forward to working with him, which says everything. Look no further!

Perfect! James is very invested in our student, he digs deep in finding the problems, and won’t move on until our student understands everything entirely. My only regret is that we didn’t consult with him sooner because it’s very obvious as well that the confidence in our student has suffered because of how long he went on without help in school. Although progress can be slow at times, it’s very obvious that James’s efforts are making an impact on our student and are evident in his improving grades. Anybody would be happy with the work that James does!

James worked with me on my college essays, and he was very helpful! He truly understands how to make you stand out to colleges. He's very knowledgeable and very talented. James is takes his time to get to know you, your story, and your interests in order to best represent you in your essays. He definitely was instrumental in me getting into UVA amongst other competitive universities. I highly recommend using James's help in the college application process, or any other writing focused area! I learned a lot from him that I will continue to use as I go into college.

James has been working with our son (now 8) for almost two years. He has helped our son improve his reading and writing skills enormously, while helping to boost his confidence in himself and his abilities. My son has also made progress in math with James' help. Even though a tutor session is work - my son looks forward to his sessions with James and has a lot of fun learning! I give James a 5 star rating because he is an outstanding tutor.

James worked with me to conceive and edit my college-application essays. He understands what colleges want. His tutoring definitely helped me get into Virginia Tech -- ahead of friends with better GPA's and SAT scores. I learned so much working with him, and I am now applying it in my college courses.

James was a fantastic sounding board for our high-school junior daughter. He helped her brainstorm ideas, develop a theme for her essays, and pushed her to do her very best in a manner that is warm and encouraging. He was a perfect fit for our daughter, and I can't recommend him enough."

James tutored my 14-year-old son for six months last year. He showed great dedication in difficult circumstances during the pandemic, getting tested for COVID every month and driving an hour each way twice a week. Working patiently and creatively with my son, James helped him become a confident writer, more successful in math, and raise his grades considerably. I could not recommend James more highly."

"James has been working with our son for almost a year, starting when he was 6 and continuing since he turned 7. James has helped him make great progress in reading and early writing. Our son has a strong personality and sometimes resists direction, but he really flourishes with James' combination of gentle firmness and making learning fun. We can't imagine a better tutor."
