About David
Originally from Glasgow, I studied Arabic and Persian at the Oxford and later at the University of Tunis. I completed a doctorate at Ohio State University on history and nostalgia in Tunisia and until summer 2023 taught at the University of Saint Andrews in Scotland. With 20 years experience of life and work in Tunis and Algiers, I can offer learners a richly textured course based on experience of teaching as well as of the sights and sounds of the North African streetscape. I have had a number of exhibitions of my artwork in Tunis as well as in Yemen. I am alert to the nuances and subtleties of place as well as those of language and culture.

Using a method of sentence analysis I learned in the University of Tunis, I seek to give learners an understanding of the connections between components of sentences. I use Arabic grammatical terms wherever possible and give ample opportunity for learners to speak Arabic. I have knowledge of Tunisian/Libyan spoken Arabic as well as literary Arabic.
