About Natalie
When it comes to my own writing and also teaching others how to write well, I embrace "growth mindset." I truly believe writing is a set of skills that can be learned, practiced, and refined. It just takes a thoughtful teacher to point out patterns and things to work on—which in this case, that's me! It would be an honor to work with you on something as vulnerable and personal as writing. In terms of experience, I hold a PhD in History from Duke, with specialization in Latin American History, and certificates in Latin American Studies and Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies. I have graded hundreds of student writing—from research papers to reading responses. I look forward to working with you!

As a first-gen college student who attended Princeton, and completed their doctoral studies at Duke, I have witnessed firsthand how difficult it is for many teachers and professors to teach 'how to write.' A lot of talented people know how to write, but don't know how to teach good writing. Learning how to write consistently well was one of my biggest obstacles, but because of it, I learned how to improve my writing, and it has made me a better teacher because of it. Now, as an instructor I have assessed over hundreds of students' essays and met with dozens of students outside of class time to improve their writing. I have led a research seminar where I made sure each student produced a fantastic research paper by the end of the semester. I am especially equipped to work with high school/college/adult students. From start to finish—or at whatever point you are in the process—I will guide you through the process of refining your paper/project. I am a compassionate reader and teacher, who is attentive, but also, rigorous. I will identify areas of improvement and together, with practice, we will improve your skills in writing, critical thinking, and historical analysis. I am happy to work with writing for any kind of subject, which can include research papers, argumentative essays, admission essays, etc. My students have recognized and appreciated my willingness to meet them where they are, telling me that I am “accessible,” “a great resource,” and “approachable.” My students have also thanked me for the “overall positive learning environment” I cultivate. Another student shared that "[Dr. G] ...is always willing to help students who were [are] struggling or had [have] questions.”
