About Delara
I have been tutoring for various organizations in New York City and the Montreal area for five years, and every time I have a new student I learn how to become a better tutor. I love coming up with lesson plans, and I love the pride I feel when a student says they finally understand a topic that they were struggling with, or shows me a good grade on an exam or paper I helped them prepare for.
I am most qualified to tutor students from grades K-12 in English, history, geometry, algebra II, calculus, and biology. I went to the Bronx High School of Science in New York City, where I took 8 AP exams and scored 4s and 5s on all of them. The exams were AP Biology (5), AP Calculus AB (4), AP Psychology (4), AP World History (4), AP U.S History (5), AP English Language (5), AP English Literature (4), and AP Comparative Government and Economics (5). I also took the ACT exam, and scored a 34 overall (36 English, 34 Science, 35 Reading, 31 Math). Currently, I am in my second year studying Anatomy and Cell Biology with a minor in International Development studies. I work as a neurogenetics lab assistant at the McGill University Health Center at the Montreal General Hospital under Dr. Brian Chen, and as a mentor with Homework Zone at the Karanhienohnha Elementary School.

I have a variety of tutoring strategies to choose from, each one best suited for specific students and classes. There is no one-size-fits-all method of learning. For example, math-heavy classes that utilize many different equations - i.e math, physics and chemistry - the best strategies tend to center around practice problems. In these cases, I would generally go over the variables of an equation, come up with worksheets for the students to practice with, and then go over each problem the student struggled with. In classes like biology, however, different strategies are necessary. I personally have found that students have the most success in biology exams when they truly have an understanding of the mechanisms and terminology they are taught, and this can best be done through illustrating flow charts and making flash cards - both of which I am particularly good at.
English and history require an entirely different approach. The only way to effectively pass on knowledge in English and history is to teach the topics with passion. I am currently minoring in International Development, because as much as I love health science fields, the classes don't give me the opportunity to read and write about history and current events. Having been an active member of the highest performing high school Speech and Debate team in the United States, I have a clear passion for reading, writing, and coming up with arguments.

Delara is an engaged and empathetic tutor. She understands that everyone learns their own way and isn't afraid to break down concepts or lessons to make sure it is understood. When she was teaching me precalc she was able to ground the ideas in the real world and use graphs and pictures to ensure I understood the topics. Beyond that she is willing to work through things slowly to make sure you get it. I never felt rushed or stupid while learning a topic, she was always there to support and to make sure I fully understood it.
