About Alfred
I am a graduate of Classics from the University of Manchester with a passion for bringing Latin to life. I started tutoring because I found it deeply rewarding to help students gain not just superficial knowledge, but genuine confidence and independence in reading real Latin. I feel that Latin tutoring is too often out of touch and disconnected from what makes studying the language exciting. Many Latin teachers focus solely on grammar drills, leaving students disconnected from the language itself. My approach is different: I aim to build a solid grammatical foundation but all the while guiding students towards the point where they can engage directly with authentic Latin texts, understanding what the writers were really saying, in their own words. My goal is always to make Latin both rigorous and exciting.

My approach to Latin tutoring blends structured, grammar-focused learning with an emphasis on developing real fluency through free translation. I believe that mastering the fundamentals—especially grammar and vocabulary—is essential, but true confidence in Latin comes from applying that knowledge creatively and intuitively. That’s why I structure sessions to not only drill key rules and constructions, but also to challenge students with real translation work. This makes lessons more dynamic, memorable, and effective, especially for students preparing for exams or aiming to take their Latin to the next level.
