About Alex
Having attended Cambridge University from an educational background that didn't tend to send students to top universities, I've always been passionate about passing on what I've learned, and my love for my subject. I received a Double First for my time at Cambridge, and went to receive a Distinction in my MSc in Children's Social Work. I began tutoring while still an undergraduate. I have found that guiding students to new understanding, and to a new relationship with language and storytelling, is the key to a positive relationship with education as a whole. I aim not only to support students in achieving their desired grades, but to support them to develop their own relationship with learning, literature, and their own creativity.
In my free time I'm a writer of short stories and poetry, and am currently working on my first novel. I'm also a keen actor, and have appeared in a variety of theatrical productions, including as Mephistopheles in Dr Faustus, and as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. I enjoy paddle-boarding, running, and recently returned from two years backpacking around Latin America, during which time I continued to tutor online.

I have over a decade of tutoring experience, both in person and online, and became a full-time tutor in 2021. My attitude to teaching incorporates a holistic approach: difficulties in learning are usually emotional as well as intellectual - confidence can fall, frustration build, and make it hard to think clearly. Working through this requires a patient, kind and understanding approach. With experience as both a professional tutor and a Children’s Social Worker, I am experienced in working with students to understand mental blocks, undo negative thought patterns, and build a relationship with learning based on self-belief and enjoyment.
I believe that literature and writing are a path to empowerment and identity. Finding articulation enables disruption of power imbalances and hierarchies, particularly for students from disadvantaged and diverse backgrounds searching for a language for their experience. I believe that teaching literature and writing, therefore, is not only about linguistics, but about amplification: supporting students not to perform to mark schemes or deadlines, but to find in their own writing a nuance and a power that incorporates and gives voice to who they are.
I tutor for Oxbridge Applications, school entrance exams, as well as English Literature, English Language, Creative Writing, History, and essay skills. I have significant experience in working with students with a variety of different aims and abilities, as well as working with neurodiverse students.
Since I began tutoring, I have worked with hundreds of students. I have exclusively received five-star reviews on a variety of tuition sites, have helped 100% of Oxbridge applicants that I have worked with to receive a successful Oxbridge offer, and, on average, GCSE and A Level students that I have worked with have moved up 3-4 grades (e.g. from a 2, to a 5, or from a B, to an A*). More importantly, students that I have worked with have consistently given feedback that our sessions have left them more engaged with their education, and excited to learn more.
