About Annie
I’m a retired high school English teacher with over 20 years of experience in education. Although my name is Andrea, I prefer to go by Annie, or sometimes my students call me Mrs. D. Throughout my career, I’ve taught honors English, college-level writing, and integrated English courses, including at SUNY Ulster and Marist College. Currently, I own a restaurant specializing in fresh Mexican cuisine, where I handle staffing, scheduling, and communications. I also manage the rentals and oversee apartment renovations in buildings my business owns. I have two grown daughters and two dogs. I love to travel, as it gives me the opportunity to meet new people, experience different cultures, and explore places that are unlike any I know. With my extensive background in education, I’m passionate about tutoring, and I take a personalized, student-centered approach to help learners improve their writing, literature, and English skills.

As a tutor, my approach is student-centered and adaptive, meaning I focus on meeting each learner where they are and guiding them toward their goals in a supportive, engaging way. I utilize a mix of methods, including:
Socratic questioning to foster critical thinking and active engagement in discussions.
Scaffolded learning, where I break down complex topics into manageable parts and gradually increase the difficulty as the student gains confidence and skill.
Practical application by integrating real-world examples and writing exercises that are relevant to the student's interests or course material.
I believe in creating a comfortable, open environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions and explore ideas.
A typical lesson with me would include the following structure:
Warm-up: A brief discussion of current goals, recent work, or challenges. I may ask students to reflect on feedback they've received or any questions they have.
Focused instruction: I’ll introduce or review a key concept related to the student's writing, literature analysis, or English language skills. For example, we might focus on thesis development, literary themes, grammar, or essay structure.
Practice: Students engage in exercises, such as writing prompts, analyzing passages, or constructing an outline. This is where they actively apply the concept we’ve discussed.
Feedback and Revision: We review their work together, identifying strengths and areas for improvement. I provide actionable feedback and guide the student in revising or refining their ideas.
Wrap-up: We review key takeaways and set goals or homework for the next session.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor:
With over 20 years of teaching at both high school and college levels, I have a deep understanding of academic expectations and how to prepare students for success. I customize lessons to the individual needs of the student, whether they’re improving their analytical writing, mastering English grammar, or developing a strong thesis. My goal is not just to improve students' work but to empower them to become confident, independent thinkers and writers. I work with students across a broad spectrum—whether they need help with high school essays, college-level literature, or creative writing projects.
I tutor students at various levels, from middle school through college and even adult learners.
