About Gemma
I’m an ACCA-qualified finance professional and experienced tutor with a strong background in teaching practical bookkeeping and finance to adult learners, career changers, and small business owners.
Alongside my professional finance career, I currently teach bookkeeping and finance courses aligned to AAT standards, and I also deliver one-to-one training in bookkeeping and Xero. My approach is grounded in real-world experience rather than theory alone, which allows me to explain concepts clearly and practically, in a way that genuinely makes sense to learners.
I understand that many students feel anxious or lack confidence when it comes to finance, particularly if they are returning to learning or using accounting software for the first time. I create a calm, supportive learning environment where questions are encouraged and lessons are paced to suit the individual.
My aim is not just to help students pass assessments or complete tasks, but to help them build lasting understanding and confidence so they can apply what they’ve learned independently.
I’m professional, organised, and reliable, and I take pride in delivering high-quality, well-structured lessons that are tailored to each learner’s goals and level of experience.

My approach to tutoring is practical, supportive, and confidence-focused. I specialise in helping learners understand bookkeeping and accounting.
I focus on:
• breaking topics down into clear, manageable steps
• using real-world examples rather than textbook theory
• encouraging questions and discussion so learners feel safe to say “I don’t get this”
• building understanding, not just helping someone get through an assessment
I’m very aware that many learners may feel anxious or overwhelmed, so my sessions are calm, structured, and paced to suit the individual. I aim to help students understand why things are done, not just how.
Lessons are interactive rather than lecture-based, and I adapt my teaching style depending on whether someone learns best visually, practically, or through discussion. Where appropriate, I also help learners develop confidence in workplace skills such as communication, organisation, and applying finance knowledge in real situations.
Most lessons are 60 minutes, which allows enough time to cover a topic thoroughly without being overwhelming.
Longer sessions (90 minutes) can be arranged if needed, particularly for complex subjects.
My qualifications and experience
• ACCA qualified accountant
• Executive finance leader with extensive real-world experience
• Sessional lecturer teaching AAT
• Experience delivering 1:1 and small-group training
My background means I’m able to explain concepts not just from an academic perspective, but from genuine experience of how finance works in practice.
My lessons are suitable for:
• Adult learners and career changers
• Students studying AAT or introductory bookkeeping courses through to ACCA
• Beginners with little or no prior finance knowledge
I work particularly well with learners who feel nervous about finance or who have struggled with traditional classroom-based teaching in the past.
