About Portia
Hello! My name is Portia and I am currently a third year vet student at the University of Liverpool.
Science was always my favourite subject in school, and I wouldn't have gone down a STEM career path if my science teachers never made learning so interactive and exciting.
I tutor because I want to inspire students to enjoy learning in the same way I did, and hopefully help them discover what they are passionate about.
I have tutored a family friend in the past, which felt super rewarding when they achieved their results! I hope to continue to help other students achieve their goals through my tutoring methodology.

Who my lessons are for:
KS3 and GCSE students - maths, biology and chemistry
My approach to tutoring:
I understand the high expectations of tutoring from both the student’s and parent’s perspective, so strive to meet your learning goals in 3 ways.
Firstly, I ensure effective communication between myself, the student and parent prior to lessons to discuss learning outcomes and throughout the tutoring period to make sure we are keeping on track in terms of progress.
Secondly, I use a range of learning resources to consolidate what is taught each lesson. These include multiple choice questions, past papers and quizzes. Increasing student participation in lessons can help with concentration and motivation too!
Thirdly, my teaching approach summed up in one word is patience. I have experienced a frustrated, snappy teacher and know it only ends badly for all. Therefore I hope my students always feel supported and encouraged to keep trying and reach their goals.
Lesson lengths:
Most of my lessons range from 1-2 hours per week, however this can be adjusted to other preferences given our schedules align.
Past tutoring experience:
I tutored a family friend a couple years ago for their secondary school end of year exams. Since then, I have worked on ways to optimise the student's learning experience to make tutoring a more enjoyable experience.
